Why do you trade Artist Trading Cards?

Why do you like trading ATC's? Some people get a rush just from the trade itself. Like bidding at an auction or closing an important sale. For others it's the collection itself. They want ownership of the little masterpieces and to watch their collection grow. Still others, like the exchange and interaction with other artists who share the same passion, the collection is secondary to the discussion that took place during the trade. I myself try to strike a balance. I don't trade as often as other people do, but I can tell you a bit about a each card, and hopefully a bit about each person I trade with. What are your thoughts on this?

I have to admit that I am a "purist" when it comes to Artist Trading Cards in that I believe each card should be an original piece of art - not a copy & that ATCs should not be sold. No money should change hands. As anna banana says: "There are no stars". BUT, being as I live in a very small community, the opporunity to trade one-on-one in person is not available. Hence, I rely on word of mouth (from other traders) and/or on connecting with traders via the internet. Not only an artist, but I am a collector. I will trade with anyone (another "purist" point) and I have found, that even thought I am left to trade via the mail/connecting on the internet, I too, get to know my traders and in some cases we become friends. I guess for me though, it is the trade itself. Awaiting the next envelope to arrive in the mail!

This was a great question, by the way. And I look forward to reading what other traders think/feel.

I love to trade as it is great to see the different talant out there and the thought of recieving a card from someone somewhere else that shares the same interest is exciting. Any medium, everyone has there own preference and I love theme swaps with groups the best.. they are sooo fun.

I like the interaction with other artists, and I value my collection. I'm a purist in that I will never pay for or sell an ATC, and I will never trade 1 for 2 or more. If someone feels their's is better then they should keep it. If someone feels mine is better I still trade 1 for 1. Like any art form, one person will like an ATC and another person won't, we all have our own tastes. One piece of art is not better than another. I'm not a purist in that I will trade with someone I meet through mail and/or internet. If I didn't, I would never get a chance to trade.

Back to comment again. I stopped trading ATCs for about 6-7 months as I was very disappointed in the quality of trades received. Now I am starting to question EVERYTHING!
